Wireless Access control systems - Costs and benefits

Access control systems are installed in a variety of different settings and within different industries for different reasons.  Whilst there are costs associated with the installation, operation and modifications to these systems, they very often pay for themselves in the safety they offer both people and property.

In this short guide we look at wireless access control systems and some of the benefits of these systems over a wired system.

Wireless systems are not always suitable due to location and building structure, speaking with a security expert before deciding which system is best is advisable to avoid un-necessary expenditure.

The installation of these systems has the greatest cost savings associated. There is generally due to the labour associated with the installation. Wireless installation is quicker and less intrusive. Wireless lock devices require little or no drilling around doors. Wired systems require cabling through and around the door. This also requires a specialist electrical engineer for the installation; therefore, the cost is greater.

Wireless systems can be installed during the day without inconveniencing employees and disturbing workforces and the organisations security is improved.

Wireless systems can also give cost savings through energy efficiency. Battery powered locks traditionally use less energy than wired locks. This is because the magnets are permanently connected to electricity. Wireless locks operate differently, they only activate or wake up when presented with a credential device and need to decide about access into an area. Over the lifetime of the solution this will result in energy savings.

Wireless locks will need a battery change roughly every two years and use a standard battery. These batteries can be rechargeable. No specialist maintenance is required but is advised.

Wireless solutions also offer flexibility if a building is re-configured or expands, this is because there is no cabling associated with the devices connected to the system. Locks can be re-fitted in another area without impacting their functionality, rather than having to buy new devices.
